When the saddle supports the rider properly, everything else becomes easier.
Pedalling feels smoother. Your upper body relaxes. You stop constantly shifting position. Long rides become more enjoyable.
Unfortunately, choosing the right saddle isn't as simple as measuring your sit bones or buying the same saddle as a professional cyclist.
A comfortable saddle is the result of two things:

I've seen cyclists replace saddles worth hundreds of dollars when all they really needed was a 4 mm adjustment.
I've also seen riders buy multiple saddles before discovering that the original saddle was perfectly suitable—it simply hadn't been set up correctly.
That's why I always position the saddle before recommending a new one.

"You just need a softer saddle."

Not quite.

It doesn't tell us how you ride.
The purpose of a saddle is simple:

When choosing saddle width, I don't just look at sit bone measurements.

It's much more important than that.

"I'm fine for the first hour."
That's exactly what I'd expect.

Eventually those muscles become tired.
That's when discomfort begins.
The location of the pain depends on which muscles have been working the hardest.
The longer someone has been uncomfortable, the more compensations they've usually developed.
By the time they come in for a bike fit, they've often changed:

Very rarely has anyone explained why they're uncomfortable.
That's what we're trying to solve.
One philosophy guides every bike fit I perform.
Don't chase the painful body part.
Understand why it's working so hard.

When riders stop shifting around, stop standing up every few minutes and stop thinking about discomfort, I know we've made the right decision.
One rider's favourite saddle can be another rider's worst purchase.
That's because saddle comfort isn't determined by popularity.
It's determined by compatibility.
Instead of asking:
"What's the best saddle?"
Ask:
"What's the best saddle for the way I ride?"
That's a much better question.
If you're considering buying a new saddle, have your current one professionally assessed first.
There's a good chance the problem is the setup rather than the saddle itself.
If you do need a new saddle, you'll know exactly why you're changing it—not just that you're changing it.

For most cyclists, I expect the adaptation period to take somewhere between 2 and 6 weeks.

One of the biggest patterns I see is cyclists riding once a week.
They come back for their follow-up appointment and say,
"It still doesn't feel natural."
I'm rarely surprised.
One ride each week simply doesn't provide enough exposure for your body to learn a new position.
Compare that to someone riding four shorter rides each week.
Even if the weekly riding time is exactly the same, they usually adapt much faster because their body receives more frequent exposure.
That's why I often recommend increasing frequency before duration.
If you've recently had a bike fit or changed your saddle, try to ride more frequently during the first few weeks.

Or maybe they simply asked their body to do too much before it had adapted.

I often compare this to strength training.
If you've never been to the gym before, you wouldn't expect to squat your personal best after your first session.
Cycling is no different.
A better position doesn't eliminate adaptation.
It changes what your body needs to adapt to.
Some discomfort can be normal during the first few rides.
Persistent symptoms are not.

"Do I need a different saddle for the type of riding I do?"
The answer is:

The type of bike matters.

A road cyclist, gravel rider and triathlete all sit on the bike differently. As your position changes, the way your pelvis loads the saddle changes as well.
That's why the same saddle can feel fantastic on one bike and completely wrong on another.
Road cycling covers a wide range of riding styles.
Some riders spend most of their time sitting on the hoods during long endurance rides.
Others spend hours riding in the drops during fast bunch rides or racing.
A good road saddle needs to balance two things:

You'll move:

For most road cyclists I'm looking for a saddle that:

It's to give you the freedom to move while remaining supported.
Gravel riding places different demands on both the rider and the bike.
Compared to road riding, gravel cyclists often:
The saddle needs to remain supportive while allowing the rider to move naturally over uneven terrain.
One thing I often notice with gravel riders is increased movement on the bike.
That's normal.
The terrain constantly changes.
The bike moves underneath you.
Your saddle should support your pelvis without making you feel locked into one position.
Too little support and you'll constantly reposition yourself.
Too much restriction and you'll struggle to move with the bike.
Finding that balance is one of the keys to long-distance gravel comfort.
Triathlon is completely different.
Instead of sitting behind the bottom bracket like a traditional road rider, triathletes rotate much further forwards.
This changes where body weight is supported.
It's also why many triathletes struggle with saddle comfort after converting a road bike into an aero position.
The position changed.
The saddle didn't.
As the pelvis rotates forwards, pressure shifts away from the sit bones.
Many traditional road saddles no longer provide adequate support.
Instead, riders often experience:

One mistake I see is riders accepting discomfort because they think it's the price of being aerodynamic.
It isn't.
If you're constantly sitting up to relieve pressure, you're no longer riding efficiently.
The fastest aero position is the one you can comfortably hold.
I've worked with riders who gained more speed by becoming comfortable than by becoming more aerodynamic.
When you stop fidgeting, sitting up and constantly changing position, your power becomes more consistent and you waste less energy.
Comfort and performance are not opposites.
Very often, they improve together.
This is one of the biggest mistakes cyclists make.
They walk into a bike shop and ask:
"What's the best gravel saddle?"
Or,
"What's the best road saddle?"
I'd rather ask:
Those answers tell me far more than the bike itself.
I've fitted two riders on the same model of bike with completely different saddles because their bodies and riding styles were completely different.
The bike doesn't choose the saddle.
The rider does.
Cyclists often assume changing disciplines means they need completely different equipment.
Sometimes they do.
More often, they need to understand how their position has changed.
The position usually drives the saddle choice—not the logo on the frame.
If you're buying a new bike, don't wait until after you've ridden it for six months before thinking about the saddle.
Getting the right saddle and position early will make every ride more enjoyable and may help prevent unnecessary discomfort from becoming an ongoing problem.

Once the rider is on the bike, I spend time watching before making any adjustments.
This is one of the biggest differences between a dynamic bike fit and simply measuring angles.
I'm looking for:
More importantly, I'm asking one simple question:
Does the rider look stable?
If the answer is no, I want to understand why before changing anything.
One mistake I see regularly is changing multiple things at once.
If you change:
...all in the same adjustment, you don't know which change produced the improvement.
During a bike fit, I prefer making one deliberate adjustment before reassessing the rider.
This creates a much clearer decision-making process.
The biggest improvements usually come from a series of small adjustments.
Rarely from one massive change.
Every adjustment should answer a question.
Has stability improved?
Has the rider stopped sliding forwards?
Has knee tracking improved?
Does the rider feel more supported?
If the answer is yes, we continue.
If not, we reassess and consider another approach.
Bike fitting isn't about chasing numbers.
It's about observing how the rider responds.
Only after assessing the rider do I decide whether changing equipment will provide additional benefit.
Sometimes the answer is yes.
Sometimes it's no.
If the current saddle is working well after adjusting the position, I won't recommend replacing it.
If a different saddle is likely to improve support, I'll explain exactly why.
Every recommendation should have a clear reason behind it.
I don't believe in selling components.
I believe in solving problems.
Sometimes that involves:
